Christopher Vizzina, 4-star QB in 2023 class, commits to Clemson

Publish date: 2024-06-20

Clemson’s football team had been quiet on the recruiting trail in the Class of 2023 prior to this week, but on Tuesday, the Tigers made a big splash by landing four-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina.

Vizzina committed to Clemson in a ceremony at his high school on Tuesday afternoon, picking the Tigers over Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Auburn, Ohio State and Georgia. Vizzina unofficially visited Clemson on April 4, then again Saturday for the Tigers’ spring game Saturday. He announced Sunday that he would make a decision Tuesday.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., Vizzina is the No. 52 player in the nation and the No. 7 quarterback, according to the 247Sports composite. He is Clemson's second commit in the Class of 2023, joining wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph.

Clemson recruiting: What the Tigers are getting in QB Christopher Vizzina

What does this mean for Clemson?

Grace Raynor, Clemson beat writer: Vizzina’s commitment shows that even after a down year, Clemson is still one of the most dominant teams in the country in recruiting quarterbacks. Clemson landed five-star freshman Cade Klubnik, the top quarterback in the Class of 2022 and now has Vizzina coming in behind him.

The Tigers originally had their sights set on Arch Manning for the Class of 2023, but once Manning moved on, Clemson offered Vizzina. The staff had been building a relationship with him prior to offering, and it paid off in a big way Tuesday. With Klubnik and Vizzina at the position in 2023, Clemson should be one of the deepest teams in the country at quarterback.

What does this mean for Vizzina?

Raynor: Vizzina knows he’ll have to come in behind Klubnik and possibly junior DJ Uiagalelei if Uiagalelei is still with the program in 2023.

In committing to Clemson, Vizzina is signaling that he’s not afraid of competition but is also willing to learn during his freshman year. It will be interesting to see how the pecking order shakes out, given that Vizzina is only one year behind Klubnik. Klubnik committed to Clemson knowing he was two years behind Uiagalelei.
