DISCOVER: Say hi to Waterparks

Publish date: 2024-06-02

If there’s one thing you need to know about Waterparks it’s this: they’re all about having fun. No rules.

Based out of Houston, Texas, the trio consists of Awsten Knight (lead vocals/guitar), Geoff Wigington (vocals/guitar) and Otto Wood (vocals/drums). The band formed in 2011, with the original lineup consisting of Knight, Wigington, Gage Matthieu (bass) and Owen Marvin (drums). Wood came in following the departure of Marvin, and Matthieu left in 2015.

Within their inaugural year, they released their first single, “I Was Hiding Under Your Porch Because I Love You,” from their first EP Airplane Conversations, released in 2012. In an interview with Alternative Press, Knight revealed that they like their three-man band dynamic, even if there’s no bass. But little did they know that Mikey Way from My Chemical Romance (sobs) would provide bass for them in the future.

Fast-forward to now. Since 2012, they’ve released two more EPs (Black Light and Cluster). Just last year, they signed a record deal with Equal Vision Records. Also, did we mention their managers are Benji and Joel Madden from Good Charlotte? How awesome is that?

They started 2016 strong, touring with Never Shout Never on the “Black Cat” tour and playing SXSW. This summer, they played every date on the Vans Warped Tour. Just recently, they performed in Europe supporting Good Charlotte AND they’re a supporting act for Sleeping With Sirens’ upcoming ‘End the Madness!’ tour. It’s tour galore!

Waterparks are a band that could be classified as similar to Fall Out Boy, Blink-182 or Good Charlotte. They could be given the pop-punk stereotype with the skinny jeans and colored hair (looking at you, Awsten). But in all seriousness, these three guys are here to make their mark and to have a good time doing what they love. Hopefully one day we’ll see them on their own headlining tour!

In addition to all the excitement, they just announced the release of their first full-length album, Double Dare! The first single, “Stupid for You” is out now on Apple Music and Spotify. The album, out November 4th, is available for preorder. Listen to it here!

If pop-punk is your thing, Waterparks will become your new obsession. Also, if you ever meet them, bring Awsten HEB brand orange juice. He’ll LOVE you.
