George Foreman's pet Dago

Dago (Dog)

Breed: German Shepherd | Adopted 1970

The most famous of George Foreman’s dogs is Dago the German Shepherd, whose name is sometimes spelled Daggo or Diago. Foreman had Dago in the 1970s and took him around the world. They’re pictured together here at a 1974 press conference in Paris for the upcoming “Rumble in the Jungle” fight against Muhamed Ali. The “Rumble in the Jungle” took place in Zaire, which is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was later claimed in a 1996 documentary on the fight that Africans were offended that Foreman brought a German Shepherd, due to the previous use of German Shepherds by the Belgian colonialists as police dogs to oppress the local people. Foreman later said that people told him not to bring Dago, but he insisted that he never travels without him. He then said that nobody was upset at seeing the dog with him.

He told the Wall Street Journal in 2012, “Everybody said, Oh, no, he shouldn’t be bringing the dog to the country. I’m like, I’m not going anywhere without my dog. That was the company I kept for hiking and running. After I lost the fight, I lost all my friends but the dog. The Africans loved the dog. People said I shouldn’t have brought the dog because of the people who occupied the country. I said, Look, man, these people got hyenas and lions. I don’t think they’ll be afraid of the dog.”

George Foreman’s love of German Shepherds has lasted half a century and continues to this day. He breeds GSDs from Germany and even takes them back to their homeland to compete in dog shows. In 2019, Foreman tweeted that he currently had 22 German Shepherds.

He also told the Wall Street Journal, “I’m never without my dog. They would be in every corner of the house, and my wife will not allow me to have any more than that. But I have lots of dogs. I love the dogs. I breed them. I always have a puppy coming. And I show dogs. I show German shepherds.”

George Foreman is a retired American professional boxer and entrepreneur. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, known for his powerful punches and dominant performances in the ring.

Foreman began his boxing career in the late 1960s and quickly gained a reputation as a formidable opponent. He won the heavyweight gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and turned professional the following year. He quickly rose through the ranks, winning his first 37 fights and becoming the world heavyweight champion in 1973 after defeating Joe Frazier in a highly anticipated matchup known as the “Sunshine Showdown.”

Foreman’s reign as champion was short-lived, however, as he was defeated by Muhammad Ali in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” bout in 1974. After suffering a devastating loss, Foreman retired from boxing and focused on his personal life and his burgeoning career as a television personality and entrepreneur.

In 1987, after a ten-year hiatus from the sport, Foreman returned to boxing at the age of 38. He shocked the world by winning the heavyweight title again in 1994, becoming the oldest fighter ever to win the championship. He retired for good in 1997 with a record of 76 wins and just 5 losses, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Throughout his career, Foreman was associated with many notable athletes, including Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Larry Holmes. He was also involved in several high-profile fights, including the “Rumble in the Jungle” with Ali and a rematch with Evander Holyfield in 1991.

In addition to his boxing career, Foreman has also found success as an entrepreneur and television personality. He is the founder of the George Foreman Grill, a popular kitchen appliance that has sold millions of units worldwide. He has also hosted several television shows, including the popular reality show “The Contender.”
