The Me First Attitude; We Are All GUILTY

We all live in a world where self-sacrificing love has become a major problem. People do not think about the welfare of others anymore. Gone are the days when a person could sacrifice his/her time, work, and other valuable things just to make sure his/her neighbor is fine. Same cannot be said about that strength of character today. The wind of selfishness is now blowing everywhere.

People are more self-centered now than before. The effects of the self-centered philosophy of me-first are far-reaching indeed. Unfortunately, all of us are subconsciously affected by the fruits produced by this mentality. We put ourselves first in everything we do, yet we fail to realize the effect is cyclic. It goes round and round, and affect all of us negatively in the long run.

Me-firsters have the same doctrine of ‘Do your own thing’. When analysed carefully, this phrase has a strong connotation. It urges a person to do whatever he/she feels like doing, whether it will affect others negatively or not. After all, nobody owns anyone.

I have for the past years been watching series of crime scene investigations. The level of atrocities that people commit makes me wonder if they really cared for their fellow human beings. In effect, it shows people care less about the happiness of others.

A Chicago man did his own thing, which was sodomy, and 32 boys were dead. He murdered them, threw some into the river, and the others he buried under his house and garage. The remains of 28 were found there. He was convicted of sodomy with a 16-year-old boy and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He served only 18 months. Even if he was made to serve 100 years, the damage could never be reversed.

All of us know—and are victims of—the decline of quality in the products we buy. It is of no doubt that almost all manufacturers want to make more profit than necessary. This has led these me-minded manufacturers (from super big companies to very small companies) to use inferior materials for their products. How many times have you not complained about the ingredients used in the preparation of food you bought outside home? Sometimes you doubt if they prepare their own foods like that. What then brought about the change? It’s all because the person is definitely not thinking about you, but rather, the extra profit he/she is going to make.

Me-minded workers also demand more pay for less work and poor workmanship. Not only this; many are greedy thieves. Some sneak materials from off the job. At times, they justify their actions by claiming their employers don’t pay them well enough. ‘Everybody’s doing it. Why shouldn’t I?’ The employer views it as thievery, whilst the workers view it as extreme benefits.

Today, many people rush into politics and seek prominent positions. The obvious truth – for which some may tell you point blank – is to ‘chop’ money (I guess by now the popular Victoria Hammer saga has come to mind).

If the so-called leaders think about their citizens, would situation be as it is now? Government officials at various sectors squander state monies without thinking of the after-effects it will have on the nation. It is probably because they think of themselves and their families first. Others welfare do not matter to them.

Remember, all such costs are paid for by you and me. We are the victims. Even the me – firsters also pay some costs in one way or another. If we all decide to love others and put their interests first, the world will be a happy place to live in. I am however unsure if this will ever happen.
